Doctors of the V.I. Razumovsky University Clinical Hospital No. 1 performed laparoscopic removal of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GISO) of the stomach using a video endoscopic complex with 3D visualization.

This type of neoplasm is extremely rare and accounts for less than 1% of all stomach tumors. According to doctors, it often occurs covertly and is detected accidentally when diagnosing other diseases. Despite the low incidence, this tumor poses a serious threat to health, as it can cause serious complications.

"Epithelial tumors are most common in the stomach: benign polyps and malignant cancer. They rarely come from the muscle membrane or from cells of the APUD system: leiomyomas or neuroendocrine tumors. Tumors from the stromal skeleton do not manifest themselves clinically for a long time, but they are often a source of severe gastrointestinal bleeding. With the improvement of diagnostic methods, we have been able to diagnose them at the preclinical stage," said Sergey Kapralov, Head of the Department of Faculty Surgery and Oncology at Saratov Medical University.

The doctors, under the guidance of Mikhail Kolokoltsev, head of the planned surgical department of the Mirotvortsev Hospital No. 1, performed a complex minimally invasive operation using a video endoscopic complex with 3D visualization. The tumor was isolated from the surrounding tissues using modern energy equipment, and the stomach wall defect was sutured with innovative surgical material. This technology allows surgery through minimal punctures, minimizing the risk of complications and speeding up the rehabilitation period.
