Doctors of Saratov Medical University saved a patient with stones in the salivary gland

30 December 2025
Maxillofacial surgeons of the UKB No. 1 of the Razumovsky State Medical University successfully performed a rare operation to remove stones from the parenchyma of the parotid salivary gland.

The patient complained of periodic pain and swelling in the area of the left parotid salivary gland. During the examination, the specialists found that he had glandular calculi.

A team of doctors, maxillofacial surgeons Dmitry Bondarenko and Danil Kuznetsov, together with ultrasound diagnostics doctor Denis Nikitin, successfully performed the operation and removed all the stones, preserving the facial nerve.

Previously, operations of this level of complexity were carried out exclusively in specialized medical centers of federal significance. The main difficulty of such surgical intervention is the search for stones in the thickness of the parenchyma gland and the need to preserve the integrity of the branches of the facial nerve, which passes through the thickness of the salivary gland tissue and provides motor activity of the facial muscles.

Due to the interaction of various services of the Saratov Medical University's UKB No. 1, the effectiveness of patient treatment is increasing. The joint work of the surgeons of the department and the ultrasound doctor simplifies surgical intervention and reduces the time spent by the patient under anesthesia.
